    Memorial tree needs a home

City Council members discussed possible locations for a memorial tree to be planted in honor of late Saratoga Mayor Jim Shaw at their Oct. 6 meeting.

A large bronze plaque will also be purchased and placed at the base of the tree.

According to City Manager Larry Perlin, the original desired location was in front of the Community Center, but since the type of tree decided on is an oak, that site would not be big enough.

"At the Civic Center there are locations to plant a tree but none are that noticeable to walkers," Perlin said.

Since all council members preferred the Civic Center grounds, they agreed to revisit the issue at their next meeting.

Sale of rare books benefits library

The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries will hold an auction of 200 rare and collectible books, including children's books, on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the library.

There will be 30 finely bound antiquarian books, 30 art and photography books and seven classic car books included in the auction, along with history, travel, poetry and science books. Dickens' Hard Times, bound in fine leather, is included, as are 98 of the original 100 pages of engravings from J. Michaud's History of the Crusades, illustrated by Gustav Doré in the 1800s.

The books are on display at the Friends' Book-Go-Round, 14410 Oak St., from noon to 5 p.m. through Oct. 17. Bid online at http://members.aol.com/BookGoRnd, where there is a full list including descriptions. Call 408.867.5552 for more information.

Part of trail will be closed

The Parks and Recreation Commission this week voted unanimously to shut down the worn Tank Trail portion of Parker Ranch Trail temporarily, saying that it may be dangerous for hikers and bicyclists to use. Commissioner Marianne Swan said that until a decision is made on how to fix the trail, it should be closed.

"Whatever we do, we have to ensure the safety of the people," she said.

The commission passed a motion to close the portion of the trail until it can be repaired or rerouted.
