Rec. Dept. plans coastal day trip to see butterflies

The Saratoga Recreation Department offers an all-day bus trip to Santa Cruz on Oct. 28. Lead by biologist/naturalist Greg Meyer, the trip's first stop is to see the throngs of monarch butterflies that seek shelter at Natural Bridges State Beach for the winter. The 65-acre park also offers tide-pools to explore and a visitor center with exhibits on ecology and wildlife. Afterward is a hosted lunch with choice of chicken breast, London broil or seafood of the day. The afternoon's activities consist of surprises Meyer has prepared.

The trip lasts from approximately 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and costs $49 per person. Adults of all ages are welcome. Space is limited; early reservations are recommended. For more information, call 408.868.1248.

    Foothill Club hosts lecture

For the first of its 1999-2000 public lecture series, the Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes David Middlebrook on Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. for a presentation titled "The Arts and the Community: An Artist's Evolution From Private to Public Art."

Middlebrook is a local artist and is also associate director of the fine arts department at San Jose State University. He describes his artwork as an attempt to connect the forces of time in space and as a visual diary of "what has been, what is and what could be as I have observed it."

The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, 20399 Park Place. A donation of $6 is appreciated. For more information, call 408.867.2361 or 408.354.2527.
