Saratoga NewsCandidates file statements on their campaign contributionsIncumbent Gillian Moran outpaces the competitionJackman comes in secondBy Sarah Lombardo Incumbent City Council candidate Gillian Moran is leading the campaign fundraising race, according to financial statements filed with the Saratoga City Clerk's office Oct. 5. Moran has raised almost $9,000 in monetary donations from 35 individual contributors, including $500 from Villa Montalvo board trustee Phil Boyce; $175 from former Saratoga councilmember and San Jose attorney David Moyles; $200 from Finance Commissioner Charlene Low; $100 from Finance Commissioner Jim Ousley; $250 from Planning Commissioner Mark Pierce; and $250 from La Fondue Restaurant, owned by residents Mitch and Tracey Culter. Boyce, San Jose Unified high school counselor Frederick Andres and Bay Area Air Quality Management District executive James Guthrie represent Moran's top contributors, donating $500 each. The former mayor also received a $1,500 loan from her husband, Tom, but has received no non-monetary contributions. Erna Jackman has raised almost $5,500 in total donations from 12 separate monetary contributors. Among Jackman's supporters are current Vice Mayor Jim Shaw, with $100; former councilmember Meg Caldwell, with $300; current councilmember Stan Bogosian, with $200; former councilmember Francis Stutzman, with $250; and local Saratoga Creek activist Don Whetstone, with $200. Jackman's highest contributors include Morris Jones, the Committee to Elect Evan Baker and the Committee to Elect John Mehaffey, who donated $1,000 each to Jackman's campaign. The retired nurse also reported $302 in non-monetary contributions, including the waiver of a $30 checking account fee from Bank of America, located on Big Basin Way, and $272 in signs, donated by former councilmember Vic Monia. Evan Baker and John Mehaffey raised a little over $3,000 apiece with money donations from 10 contributors each, including $100 each from Shaw; $300 each from Caldwell; $200 each from Bogosian; $250 each from Stutzman; and $200 from Whetstone. Jones also donated $1,000 each to the Baker and Mehaffey campaigns. Both Mehaffey and Baker received $272 each in non-monetary contributions--in the way of signs--from Monia. Mehaffey also received a waiver of a $30 checking account fee from Bank of America on Big Basin Way. Candidate and current Finance Commission chairman Nick Streit was not required to file financial statements because he has raised less than $1,000 for his campaign. Candidates are required to update their campaign contributions report on Oct. 22; contributions received after Oct. 18 must be filed within 24 hours of receipt. Candidates are required to make a final report by Jan. 31, 1999.
