Collectible books on sale at October auction

The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries' October Book Auction takes place Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. Some books have already had silent bids placed on them. Verbal bidding on these begins at $2 more than final silent bids under $25, and $5 more than final silent bids that are $25 or more.

Among the 200 rare and collectible books for sale during the auction are antiquarian books (1815 to turn-of-the-century) with color lithographs; art references and artist biographies; children's literature from throughout the world; legal classics, often with gilt-stamped leather; local history/Western/Americana material including books on and by Mary Hayes Chynoweth of San Jose (builder of the Hayes Mansion) and Saratogan Emma S. Garrod; military history books; and world history and travel selections.

There is no charge to attend the event, which is hosted by auctioneers Ann Marie Burger and David McLaughlin. Proceeds benefit the Saratoga Community Library. The next auction is scheduled for April 1999. For more information, call 867-5552. A complete list of books for sale is available on the Web at www-lib.co.santa-clara.ca.us/Saratoga/SAbgrA.html.
