Postal service offers 24-hour information

Residents of Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga and many South Bay cities--as well as several in Santa Cruz County--now have their calls to local post offices directed to an 800 number, where trained operators can answer routine postal questions 24 hours a day. Questions or concerns about postal service that operators cannot answer are referred to the appropriate local post office.

The new number, 1-800-ASK-USPS, will eventually serve most post offices in the western United States and ultimately throughout the country. The Postal Service established a toll-free number after determining that 80 percent of people calling post offices seek basic information regarding ZIP codes, postage rates, hours of operation and address changes.

Postal information is also available on the Internet at the USPS Web site.
