Miller Avenue residents meet with the council

Miller Avenue residents will get a chance to discuss traffic problems on their street with the Saratoga City Council at its meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the Senior Day Care of the Community Center.

The council is expected to discuss what steps can be taken to try to reduce speeding along the residential street, which residents say has become dangerously busy since the opening of Highway 85 in 1994. Many Miller Avenue residents claim out-of-town commuters use Miller Avenue as a cut-through from Cox Avenue to Prospect Road, and say they want the city to look into implementing traffic-calming techniques similar to those recently begun along Baylor Avenue, another street that has witnessed an increase in traffic and speed since the opening of Highway 85.

Baylor Avenue traffic-calming techniques include the installation of medians, stop signs and a traffic hump.

City seeks artists for SPAM work

The city of Saratoga would like to introduce its residents to SPAM--the Saratoga Public Art Museum, that is. The city has a triangular space in the City Hall courtyard to showcase student art and would like interested artists to contact the city. The space is 16 by 21 by 25 feet, surrounded by maple trees and benches at City Hall, located at 13777 Fruitvale Ave. Artwork is displayed on a rotating basis.

Any art students interested in loaning their work to the city for display are encouraged to call Jennie Loft at 868-1218.

Library maps out Net sites for kids

The Saratoga Community Library will have a program about children's sites on the Internet Saturday, Oct. 18, at 9:30 a.m. The program will begin with a presentation by the children's librarians and end with a chance for parents to try out the library computers. The librarians will also present bookmarks, sites specifically earmarked for children.

Because the program is being held before the library opens, interested parents are asked to sign up ahead of time at the library or by calling the children's desk of the library at 867-6127. The program will also be repeated Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
