Saratoga NewsVikings pulling away from volleyball packBy Dick Sparrer Lynbrook is starting to pull away. And the other girls' volleyball teams in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League can't seem to do anything about it. The Vikings put some distance between them and the other teams in the division with two more wins last week. The Vikes powered to an easy win over Santa Clara, then backed that up with a key victory over Cupertino. Lynbrook, behind the play of 5-foot-10 junior outside hitter Michelle Buffum and senior middle blocker Susie Perry of Lynbrook, rolled to an easy 15-4, 15-1, 15-11 win over Santa Clara to open play last week. The Vikings came back to beat Cupertino 17-15, 15-9, 15-7 in a key division battle, with Buffum, Perry and Lyndsey Cleaveland leading the way. Lynbrook improved to 6-0 in the division and 16-2 overall with the win, but more importantly stuck Cupertino with its third loss. Only Milpitas remains as a threat to the Vikings. The Trojans are 4-1 in league play. In other action, Saratoga improved to 3-2 in the division and to 8-7 for the year with a 15-8, 15-7, 15-9 win over Wilcox. Prospect lost a 15-4, 15-2, 15-6 decision to Del Mar in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, despite solid performances by Jenn Cox and Carolyn Okazaki. The Panthers are now 2-3 in the rugged division and 12-8 for the year. In the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL, Westmont pushed its record to 4-2 with a 6-15, 15-5, 13-15, 15-9, 15-9 win over Leigh. The Warriors lost 15-3, 15-10, 8-16, 15-11 to unbeaten Valley Christian to open the week. Water Polo Action Suzannah Johnson tossed in two goals and Nichole Morasky, Jasmyn Cox and Tine Van Criekinge added one each to lead the Lynbrook girls' water polo team to a 5-3 win over Menlo-Atherton in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL. The Vikings improved to 2-0 in the division and to 9-4 for the year with the victory. M-A actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Lynbrook tied it 2-2 by intermission. The squads played through a scoreless third period before the Vikings outscored the visitors 3-1 in the fourth to clinch the two-goal win. The Saratoga girls pounded Cupertino the same day, winning 15-3 to even their record at 1-1 in the El Camino Division. The Falcons are 4-8 for the year. Cari Cowdrey starred for the Falcons in the win, pouring six goals into the net. In boys' water polo action, Cupertino improved to 3-0 in the De Anza Division with a 13-10 win over Saratoga. David Breitenbach tossed in six goals to lead the offensive attack for the Falcons. Gerald Askew added two goals, and Daniel O'Connell and Jon Cox scored a goal each. The Falcons slipped to 0-3 in division play with the loss. Lynbrook lost a tough 13-9 De Anza decision to Gunn. Clifton Awuy scored four goals for the Vikings in the game and Ylan Iocobovici added two goals. Ross Morrill, Frank Liao and Scott Anderson also added goals for the Vikes. Girls' Field Hockey Lynbrook is off to a 2-0 start in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL. The Vikings blanked Los Altos 3-0 and Leigh 4-0. Prospect won its opener in the Santa Teresa Division, clubbing Willow Glen 4-1. The Panthers are 5-1-2 for the year. Saratoga lost its Santa Teresa opener 2-0 to Monta Vista. The Falcons are 4-2-2 for the year. In West Valley Division play, Westmont battled Fremont to a scoreless tie before losing 5-0 to San Jose.
