Purcell leads Vikings to win

Chad Purcell blasted over for a pair of touchdowns to lead the West Valley Community College football team to a tight 20-12 win over Yuba last weekend. The win helped the Vikings improve to 3-0 in conference play and to 3-2 for the year.

Purcell, a former Monta Vista star, scored on 1-yard runs in the first and fourth periods. Jason Belligan also scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan. Brian Schweitzerhof (Saratoga) booted a pair of extra points in the win.

WVC is idle this week before visiting Monterey Peninsula College on Oct. 25, 1 p.m.

In other sports action at West Valley, the women's cross country team ran to a first-place finish in Coast Conference competition on the 3.0-mile course at Toro Park.

Rachel Wiseman covered the distance in 19:15 to finish first, with West Valley teammates Serina Delaplace (Westmont) second in 19:23 and Lisa Renteria (Westmont) third in 19:26.

The West Valley girls' soccer team blanked Gavilan 6-0, the women's volleyball team whipped the City College of San Francisco 15-3, 15-7, 15-11, and the men's water polo team pounded San Joaquin Delta 15-8.
