According to campaign finance statements filed Oct. 7, incumbent City Council candidate Ann Marie Burger has received almost twice as much as each of her three opponents has.
The reports, the first of three required by law, show that the Ann Marie Burger for Council effort has received a total of $12,601 in monetary and in-kind contributions. Candidate Jim Shaw has raised $6,808, Beth Wyman has garnered $5,863, and Stan Bogosian has received $5,528.
The largest monetary contribution to the Burger campaign so far has been a $500 contribution made by E. Floyd Kvamme. Other contributions include $300 from investment consultant Phil Boyce, $300 from Peggy Corr, $250 from Michael Fox Sr., and $200 from attorney Mark Pierce. But of the $12,601 contributed, $5,768 is made up of contributions of less than $100 each, which do not have to be itemized in the statement, and $234 was the valued amount of food and services donated to Burger by Dan Floyd of the Saratoga Village Caterer to cater her campaign kick-off party.
The largest contributions to the Committee to Elect Jim Shaw include $1,000 from Morris Jones, a technical officer at Chips & Technologies in San Jose; $1,000 from Francis L. Stutzman; and $500 from Margaret Caldwell, an educator at Stanford University. Individual contributions of less than $100 each made up $1,399 of Shaw's campaign funds. Non-monetary contributions to Shaw's campaign include 150 lawn signs from Victor Monia worth $774.
Many of the contributors to the Committee to Elect Jim Shaw are also found on the statement from the Committee to Elect Stan Bogosian. For example, Jones and Stutzman also contributed $1,000 to the Bogosian effort, and the Monia household also paid for Bogosian's campaign lawn signs. Other contributions include $500 from Pamela Lavin and $100 from Gene's Market on Cox Avenue. Contributions of less than $100 each account for $705 of Bogosian's campaign funds so far.
In contrast, contributions of less than $100 each to the Beth Wyman for Council campaign were almost double those more than $100 each, totaling $3,313. Higher contributions include $300 from retired resident Richard Siegfried, the largest single contribution, $250 from Ron Lali and $100 from Mary Ann Diridon, the institute director of San Jose State University Foundation.
Candidates running for public office are required to file campaign finance statements three times, twice before an election and once after. The next filing deadline for City Council candidates is Oct. 24.
