There were so many wonderful activities going on during Celebrate Saratoga! that one had to take time out to rest. Everyone appeared to be in good spirits. The day after the street dance, I overheard one woman say she ate so much that she had to spend four hours on her gym's stairmaster. Kimberlie Bolognesi of Kimberlie's Resale Boutique said the merchants felt there was a good turnout downtown, and numerous residents were buying things during the local events. Bill Cooper of Bella Saratoga said the restaurants did well.
As part of the celebration Ann Peterson, Lita Askanas, Joan Leonard and I did the Saratoga High School Fun Run as team members of "the track pack." Gene Brown won in his over-70 age group and must be in good shape because the following week, he was running at the track, pushing his grandchild in a jogging cart!
Warren Lampshire and his committee should be congratulated for their fine work in putting the parade together, as well as the festivities afterwards. Newcomer Jo Beach, who worked for the Saturday Evening Post in Norman Rockwell's era, said the parade reminded her of scenes right out of one of his paintings. Twelve people from our Sister City Taiko group travelled all the way from Muko, Japan to participate. The drummers did a great job and joined our local taiko group playing together afterwards at Wildwood Park. The Muko group from Japan were practicing in Saratoga the day before the parade, and police were called because of the noise. After the deputy had done his duty, he ended up posing with the Japanese group for photos.
There were 28 large cakes donated by local merchants as part of the 40th anniversary celebration at Wildwood Park. Several former mayors and our present Mayor Paul Jacobs helped serve. Former mayors in our parade were: Burt Brazil, Bill Glennon, Cole Bridges, Ann Marie Burger, David Moyles, Don Peterson, Linda Callon, Joyce Hlava, Frances Stutzman, Karen Anderson and Willem Kohler.
Other News: Mary Ward of Saratoga urges you to see "the greatest fashion show on earth under the big top." The Bellermine Mothers' Guild is featuring fashions from Saks Fifth Avenue of San Francisco. You can enjoy watching student performers, faculty and moms, as well as local high school students, in the center ring. The benefit is for the Bellermine Scholarship Endowment Fund and will be held Friday, Nov. 1 at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel. There is a luncheon and dinner show. Call 415/948-0722 for reservations and details. Saratogans Mary Ann Cochrane, Janice Morimoto, Lynn Lally and CiCi Roshon are involved the preparations.
Lois and Norman Carter of Saratoga have been busy lately. They gave a birthday party for their 94-year-old neighbor, Jack Heitzmann, helped with the wedding of their son, John, to Lynn Stepovich and shortly afterwards left for a month's tour of the British Isles.
