Washingtonian to steer city finances
The city has hired Jesse Baloca from the state of Washington to serve as its new administrative services director. The position oversees the city's budget and financial assets.
Baloca is currently serving as the interim assistant finance director for the city of Bellevue, Wash. Before his time in Bellevue, Baloca helped Sammamish, Wash., gain incorporation as a city and became its first finance director.
Baloca's selection followed a search involving members of the Saratoga City Council, staff and commissions, and representatives from other surrounding cities.
He follows in the footsteps of Mary Jo Walker, who left the city after three years as administrative services director in July. She ran a tight fiscal ship, according to city officials. Melissa Eddy has served as the interim director.
District considers excavating creek
The Santa Clara Valley Water District is considering excavating the Calabazas Creek bed near Comer Drive. The bed has filled in with sediment in recent years to the point where residents who once walked below the Comer Drive bridge on the creek bed can no longer fit under the bridge.
The district says the creek bed, which backs up behind an artificial head wall, has not been maintained since 1992.
Under several options being considered by the district, the head wall would be removed along with the sediment behind it.
During a recent presentation before the Saratoga City Council, council members worried that the sediment buildup might cause excessive flood damage.
The district will host a neighborhood meeting on the issue in December.
Talk will address breast cancer
Saratoga chiropractor Paula Strauss will host a free lecture on breast cancer detection on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at her office, 1818 Saratoga Ave. The event coincides with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The talk will touch on the range of testing available, including breast thermography. The new technique indicates changes in breast tissue that would go undetected by mammography, ultrasound or self-exams.
The lecture is free. Seating is limited; to reserve a seat, call 408.866.8820.
