Saratogan completes cadet basic training

Saratogan Laura Miller recently completed the cadet basic training program at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

The Castilleja school graduate, daughter of Christian S. and Nancy C. Miller of Saratoga, was required to take the training in order to be accepted into the U.S. Corps of Cadets at the academy.

During the six-week program, Miller trained in basic military skills, rifle marksmanship, field tactical maneuvers, physical fitness and endurance, military courtesy, drill and ceremonies and academic instruction.

Once Miller graduates from the academy, she will receive a bachelor's degree and a commission as second lieutenant in the Army.

He was selected by a national panel from a pool of more than 100 senior-level college administrators and faculty.

The institute is sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College in cooperation with the University of Texas. It gives community college leaders the opportunity to review their abilities and interests, to refine their skills and to participate in discussions on leadership.

Teacher participates in research program

Eighth-grade Redwood Middle School teacher Mia Onodera recently took part in the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of Southern California.

Onodera spent eight weeks at the SCIPP lab performing summer research along with other middle and high school teachers from around the state. The program helps teachers learn more about the most current and relevant research on how to pique children's interest in learning physics.

To check if someone is registered, visit www.sss.gov and click on the link titled "check a registration." Enter the man's last name, Social Security number and date of birth. The Web site will research the database and display the man's Selective Service number and effective date of registration.

Volunteers needed for mentor program

The Saratoga Union School District Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is seeking volunteers to be mentors to small groups of students.

GATE coordinator Terri Raynaud said the program has a list of students who would like to be mentored, but not enough volunteers to handle all of the students.

Raynaud is looking for volunteers in the areas of chess, art, writing, math, science and technology. Mentors can choose to work with children either before, after or during school.

For more information, contact Terri Raynaud at 867-3424, ext. 206.
