Falcons ace Lancers, sweep Los Gatos in girls' net actionBy Dick Sparrer Robyn Katzman, Camille Behnke and Carolyn Hooper were each winners in singles play to lead the Saratoga girls' tennis team to a thrilling 4-3 win over St. Francis last week in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Katzman posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and Behnke came through with a 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. Hooper added a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles for the Falcons. Kate Pisani and Eileen Allen teamed for a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 3 doubles to help clinch the team win for the Falcons. Saratoga improved to 9-1 in the De Anza Division with the win. The Falcons are 13-3 for the year. Saratoga was coming off of a lopsided 7-0 win over rival Los Gatos. Katzman led the singles sweep with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles. Behnke won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, taking a 6-2, 6-1 nod, and Hooper won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3. Amanda Wise finished off the sweep with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. The Falcons matched the singles sweep by winning all three doubles matches against the Wildcats. Lindsay Lightbody and Kelly Pisani combined for a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and Julie Neogy and Nancy Walker won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Kate Pisani and Allen joined for a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep. Saratoga will host first-place Los Altos (10-0) in a key division match on Oct. 21, 3:30 p.m. Vikings keep winning Lynbrook remained unbeaten in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with a tough five-game win over Gunn. The Vikings, 8-0 in the division and 18-2 overall, beat the Titans 14-16, 15-13, 15-6, 12-15, 16-14. Saratoga stretched its record to 5-3 in the division with a 15-8, 15-4, 15-2 win over Fremont. The Falcons are 10-8 overall this year. Westmont won twice last week to improve to 6-2 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Warriors handled Pioneer 15-10, 15-6, 15-13 and whipped Silver Creek 15-5, 15-7, 15-11. In Mt. Hamilton Division play, Prospect beat Oak Grove 15-12, 15-12, 15-8 to even its record at 3-3 in league play. The Panthers are 13-8 for the year. Falcons stick Rams The Saratoga girls' field hockey team pulled out a tight 1-0 win over Willow Glen last week. The Falcons had lost to Prospect and Live Oak by matching 2-0 scores to open the week. Saratoga moved to 5-5-1 for the year with the win over the Rams and is now 1-3 in Santa Teresa Division play.
