    Gallery prepares a seasonal exhibit

Getting organized ahead of the busy winter season, the member artists at Gallery Saratoga are preparing for their annual group holiday show, which this year is titled "'Tis the Season." Opening Nov. 6 and running through Dec. 30, it features paintings in all media, photography, pottery, silk scarves, jewelry, greeting cards and ornaments. Many items are specially designed with holiday gift-giving in mind.

The public is invited to an artists' reception on Nov. 25 from 1 to 7 p.m. Gallery Saratoga is at 14531 Big Basin Way, unit 3, in the Saratoga Village. For more information, call 408.867.0458 or visit www.gallerysaratoga.com on the Internet.

    Local theatrical group has show

The West Valley Light Opera Association opens its 37th season with a production of 42nd Street at the Saratoga Civic Theatre, 13777 Fruitvale Ave. The musical, which relates how a small-town girl becomes a star, is directed and choreographed by Geri Carlson Sauls, with Bob Russell as music and vocal director and Elizabeth Dale and Kris Dudley as co-producers.

Opening night is Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. and includes a champagne gala. Performances run weekends through Dec. 1. For show times and ticket prices, call 408.268.3777 or visit www.wvlo.org on the Internet.

    Orienteering is topic of program

As part of its ongoing series of community programs, REI Saratoga has invited Abby Wolfe of the Bay Area Orienteering Club to give a presentation on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. She will introduce attendees to the history and dynamics of orienteering, in which individuals use strategy and map-reading skills while walking or running to find destinations marked on a map by the event organizers who set the course.

For those interested in trying the sport for real, Wolfe will provide information on two South Bay orienteering adventures coming in November. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. There is no charge to attend this event; all ages are welcome. Call 408.871.8765 for more information.
