Falcons, Warriors both nail wins

By Dick Sparrer

The Saratoga and Westmont football teams are both chasing championships this fall. And the Falcons and Warriors each kept those title hopes alive last Friday with league victories.

Saratoga rolled to a 20-13 win over Palo Alto on Friday night while Westmont was nailing a 14-7 win over Lincoln.

Brent Colman raced for 201 yards on 17 carries, including a pair of touchdown runs, to lead the Falcons to the important win over the Vikings. Saratoga improved to 3-1 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with the win, and the Falcons are 5-2 for the year.

Colman took off on a 39-yard TD run in the first period, then scored on a 10-yard run in the second. Eric Bickenbach kicked extra points after each touchdown, and the Falcons led 14-0 at intermission.

Paly scored in the third period, but the Falcons got that one back when Daniel Goñi hit Nathan Duncan for 41 yards and a touchdown early in the fourth.

The Vikings scored again later in the game, but the Falcons held on for the close 20-13 win.

Ryan Bernard supported Colman's effort with 111 yards on 14 carries in the Saratoga win.

Westmont, meanwhile, held on for a 14-7 win over Lincoln. The Warriors are 3-0 in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and 4-3 for the year.

Tony Oka ran five yards for a first period touchdown, and that 6-0 lead stood up through intermission.

The Warriors made it 14-0 in the third when John Trevillion blasted over from the two. Oka tossed to Ryan Brando for the 2-point conversion.

Oka completed 12 of 23 passes for Westmont, tossing five to Brando for 38 yards and four to Adam Antolin for 52 yards.

The Warriors will visit James Lick on Oct. 31 for a 1 p.m. game, and Saratoga is at Milpitas on Oct. 30, 7:30 p.m.
