New director in the Public Works Dept.

Saratoga's interim public works services manager, John Cherbone, is now the city's interim public works director. The Saratoga City Council voted to appoint Cherbone to the position Oct. 21 at the recommendation of City Manager Larry Perlin.

Cherbone replaces Public Works Director Chris Fischer, who began working for Saratoga on July 13. The Arizona native and former Los Gatos town engineer was one of only two female public works directors in the Bay Area.

Perlin said Fischer resigned due to personal health reasons.

Before Fischer, Perlin was director of the department.

Cherbone has worked for the city since 1993. In his recommendation memorandum to the City Council, Perlin stated: "[Cherbone] is intimately familiar with most of the ongoing and long-range activities and projects with which the department is involved. He has handled the full spectrum of land development processing activities, from plan checks to inspections, design and construction oversight of numerous capital projects, implementation of the city's pavement management program and, most recently, has managed the daily operation and maintenance activities performed out of the corporation yard in the absence of the permanent public works services manager."

Council commends city commissioner

The Saratoga City Council passed a resolution Oct. 21 thanking outgoing Finance Commission member Charlene Low for her work.

Low began on the commission, then called the Finance Advisory Committee, in December 1992, and, as a commissioner, played a key role during the city's budget hearings on 1997 after the repeal of the utility-users tax.

Low's term was due to expire next year. No reason was cited for her departure.
