Good week for Saratoga nettersWise, Modi win three matches for FalconsBy Dick Sparrer As weeks go, it was a pretty good one for the Saratoga girls tennis team. Then, that might be something of an understatement. The Falcons rolled to three victories last week, winning 17 of the 21 individuals matches contested. Two of the wins came in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, helping the Falcons improve to 9-2 in league play. The Falcons are 16-4 for the year. Sophomores Amanda Wise and Sheetal Modi won three matches apiece for Saratoga last week, helping the Falcons to the three team wins. Wise won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Modi won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to help the Falcons wrap up the week with a 5-2 win over Los Altos. Saratoga swept the doubles competition. Angi Chua and Nancy Walker teamed for a 7-6 (7-3), 3-1 (retired, injury) at No. 1 doubles. Eileen Allen and Kate Pisani won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles, and Melinda Peterson and Jessica Cone won 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3. Earlier in the week, Camille Behnke nailed a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles to start the Falcons on the road to a 5-2 win over St. Francis. Wise pulled out a tight 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 3 singles and Modi won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Allen and Pisani posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, and Peterson and Cone won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Saratoga opened the week with a 7-0 nonleague win over Aptos. Singles winners include Behnke 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Wise 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, Peterson 7-6 , 3-6, 7-6 at No. 3 and Modi 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Chua and Walker rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and Cone and Sheila Chako won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Angela Yeh and Allen finished off Aptos with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. In other local tennis action, Soya Clapp was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles to lead Westmont to a 6-1 win over Del Mar in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Over in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL, Lynbrook improved to 11-1 with wins over Wilcox and Milpitas last week. Belinda Rungsea, last week's athlete of the week in the Mercury News, nailed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles in Lynbrook's 7-0 win over Wilcox. Anne Sternin won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Cynthia Radnakumar won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and Titia Wang won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Elizabeth Nelson and Alison Ching nailed a 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles, Amber and Amanda Shigihara won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Olivia Tsai and Jennifer Choi won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3. Radnakumar won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Wang won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 to lead the Vikings to a 5-2 win over Milpitas two days later. The doubles teams of Nelson-Ching (6-1, 6-1), Shigihara-Shigihara (6-3, 7-5) and Tsai-Annie Chan (7-5, 6-3) were all winners.
