AYUSA scholarships are now available

AYUSA International recently announced that academic scholarships are available to high school students and recent graduates to study in Japan and Mexico for the 1998 spring semester.

Three scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, are available to students between the ages of 18 and 20 for Japan. One $2,500 scholarship is available to a student between the ages of 15 and 18 for Mexico.

Bicyclist places first in state competetition

Saratoga resident and Bellarmine College Preparatory senior Andrew Davies placed first in the Under 18 Bicycling State Championship on Sept. 7, held at San Jose's Hellyer Park.

Davies, who has been a competitive biker since age 10, trained for the state championship in the sprint, kilometer time-trial and kilometer team-time trial events. He also placed fifth at the national-level competitions, held in Trexlertown, Pa., in August.

Saratoga resident takes a lead role

Annie Mount will play the lead role of Ruth Putnam in the upcoming production of Arthur Miller's Tony-winning The Crucible at Presentation High School, Nov. 13-16.

Performances are at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13-14, 2 and 7 p.m. on Nov. 15-16. A special student matinee for school groups is available for $5 per student on Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. Ticket prices for other shows are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $6 for children under 12 years of age. Bellarmine presents dickens of a drama

Six Saratogans and one Monte Sereno resident will help bring Charles Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby to life this November at Bellarmine College Preparatory. The lead character will be played by Dave Mount. Monte Sereno resident and Saratoga High School student Katie McMahon will play numerous characters in the show, including the character of Mr. Crummels. Other Saratogans appearing in the school's first theater arts production of the year are Andrew Cochrane, Bridgette and Katie Dunlap, Greg Franzese and Anthony Juliano.

Nicholas Nickleby will be presented in Bellarmine's Benson Theatre on Nov. 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and at a matinee performance on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. For ticket information, call 294-9224, ext. 202.

SUSD choosing a new language arts series

The Saratoga Union School District will select a new language arts series this year to assist in teaching reading, writing, spelling, speaking and listening.

Three programs have been chosen to be piloted over the next few months. Teachers from each grade level have begun testing units.

Parents can view the programs at the school. SUSD's goal is to chose the best program by the spring so that the program will be ready for use in the 1998-1999 school year.
