Young Warriors win over Pioneer

John Martin scored two touchdowns, one on a 50-yard run and the other on a 69-yard kickoff return, to lead the Westmont frosh-soph football team to a 21-6 win over Pioneer last weekend.

The Warriors trailed 6-0 at the half, but Martin returned the second half boot for a game-tying score.

A fumble recovery by Cole Rasmussen stopped a Pioneer threat and set up a second Westmont TD. An 11-yard run by Phillip Miyano took the Warriors to midfield, and Martin went 50 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Miyano tossed to Carlos Mejias for the two-point conversion and Westmont led 14-6.

The Warriors made it 21-6 when Ryan Brando stole the football from the Pioneer kick returner on the ensuing kickoff and rambled 18 yards for the touchdown. Miyano's kick made it 21-6.

Johnathan Pryor picked off a Pioneer pass a few moments later, and the Warriors had the game in control.

Adam Antolin intercepted a Pioneer pass in the endzone earlier in the game, and Tim Wilson and Pryor recovered fumbles.

Mike Wiens led the offensive attack for Pioneer in the loss with 110 yards on 14 carries, and Ben Philps added 47 yards on eight carries. Kevin Sparrer led the defense with eight tackles, and Wiens, Grant Murdock and Jason Murdock were in on seven each.

Shane Esposito blocked a Westmont punt and J. Murdock recovered for Pioneer's only touchdown.
