Developer-dentist ascends to a national presidency

    By Mary Ann Cook

SOUND BYTE: Local dentist Kenneth Follmar has been elected national president of the American College of Dentistry. The college is an honorary that recognizes excellence in dentistry and leadership. Follmar has been a fellow for 25 years and on the board for 10.

He's also a developer, having built 30 medical and dental offices at White Oaks and Bascom avenues, a process that took nearly 25 years. Follmar, who retired this year, was an oral surgeon. He got his training at Northwestern University and the University of Alabama.

His list of leadership credits includes executive board positions on the Santa Clara County Dental Society, anesthesiologist and oral surgeon organizations and chairman of the Northern California section of the American College of Dentistry. His three sons are following dad's lead.

Kenneth Follmar II took over the oral surgery practice; Michael is a prosthodentist; and son-in-law William Eddie is also a dentist--all at the White Oaks location. Kenneth jokes that this must be the largest dental practice in the world because one-third of the complex is in Los Gatos, one-third in Campbell and one-third in San Jose.

Kenneth's wife, Penny, has three people on her side of the family who are dental hygienists. When these folks gather for a group photo, surely there's no need to use a flash bulb when the command to smile is issued.

EMPATHY: Louise Saadati is a physical therapist who has (ironically) undergone knee replacement surgery at Community Hospital of Los Gatos, where she's a physical therapist. After her own siege, it's likely she'll have even more empathy for those who come to her for post-surgery re-learning and reconditioning.

SOLOIST: Pianist Teresa Huang, a Saratoga High senior, will be the soloist at the Nov. 3 and 4 concert performed by the El Camino Youth Symphony, playing Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto No. 2. The Nov. 3 concert will be at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1835 Valota Road, Redwood City.

On Nov. 4 the concert will be at Gunn High School, Palo Alto. Time is 7:30 p.m. for both events; tickets are $8 and $5 at the door. Dr. Camilla Kolchinsky is conductor. Also on the bill are Beethoven's Symphony No. 8, Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3 and Wagner's Overture to Tannhauser.

Soloist Huang won first place in the Olympiad of the Arts Piano Competition in March and has twice won awards in the Menuhin/Dowling Young Musicians Competition. She began her piano studies at age 6 and now studies with Erna Gulabyan at the SF Conservatory.

Huang intends to get an MBA at Stanford and minor in music.

MARKING THE SPOT: Jack and Sue Mallory took part in a dedication ceremony during a recent trip to Waterford, Pa. The dedication restored a cemetery marker where Jack's fifth-generation Revolutionary War ancestor is buried. The cemetery had fallen into disrepair, and the markers were removed.

Jack spearheaded the monument replacement movement, which drew about 75 people. The Mallorys also celebrated the 90th birthday of his mother, Ruth.

HEAPS OF HONORS: Audry Lynch has been named to Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary that recognizes women in education. And she was a guest speaker at the annual lecture series at the University of Florida in Tampa. To no surprise, her subject was the world of John Steinbeck.

SINGING FOR HER SUPPER? Angela Mooser has a new vocation. Besides helping out at Emile's in San Jose, she's recently become certified to teach voice lessons, which she'll be doing from both the restaurant and her Los Gatos home. Angela is the wife of Emile Mooser of the aforementioned Emile's.

DOES SHE EVER UNPACK?: Avid traveler Louise Webb is signed on for four more trips between now and Dec. 3. Right now she's in San Antonio for a reunion with fellow Evanston High classmates; next she's off to a Mexican spa trip with PenWomen colleagues, then to Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Allotted time between Mexico and Spain is so tight that she hopes husband Ian can meet her at the airport with a suitcase full of clean clothes if the Mexico flight runs late.

ONLY THE BEST: Designer outfits are on sale at Discovery House on Nov. 9-11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Discovery House, 39 E. Main, Los Gatos, benefits the American Cancer Society.

THREE-ON-THREE: The JCC 3-on-3 Basketball League fall season schedules the 35+ league on Sunday, 4:30-7 p.m.; and the 45+ league on Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. Entrants can be placed on a team or bring their own. All levels of play are welcome.

Cost is $35 for the season, including playoffs with trophies. Contact is Arnold at 650.493.9400, x 228, or Arnold2r@aol.com. These half-court games are held at the Jewish Community Center, 655 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto.

NEWCOMERS DANCE: The Montalvo Service Group hosted newest members Carole Hardy, Char McCaskey, Virginia King and Mary Ann Humbert at a dinner dance at Montalvo earlier this month. Caroline Clark chaired the event, along with her committee of last year's new members.
