Roderick leads Vikings to Halloween Classic polo title

    By Dick Sparrer

It didn't come as much surprise to find Lynbrook's Mira Roderick on the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the Lincoln Halloween Classic girls water polo tourney last weekend.

After all, Roderick had just scored 12 goals in three games to lead the Vikings to the tournament championship.

Roderick, Isha Arf and Mary Block each won all-tourney honors after leading the Vikings to wins over Cupertino (4-3), Lincoln (10-7) and Monta Vista (7-6 in overtime).

Roderick's three goals sparked the Vikes to the win over Monta Vista in the finals. The clubs were locked in a 6-6 at the end of regulation, but an overtime goal led the Vikings to the win and the tourney championship.

Lynbrook had opened the tourney with a tight 4-3 win over the Pioneers. Roderick tossed in two goals for the winners.

Roderick came back with seven goals in a 10-7 win over Lincoln a game later.

Saratoga, playing in a different division of the Halloween Classic, made it to the semi-final round before falling 12-3 to Palo Alto.

Cristina Behrens tossed in two goals and Courtney Hopkins added one, but it wasn't enough for the Falcons against the Vikings.

It was the second straight loss for Saratoga to Paly. The two squads had met earlier in the week in a game in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, and the Vikings pulled out a tight 9-4 victory.

Courtney Crase drilled a pair of goals for the Falcons and Behrens and Sarah Oberhauser hit one each.

The loss left the Falcons 3-2 in the De Anza Division while Palo Alto improved to 5-0.

Saratoga will now gear up for the league tournament that's slated for Oct. 31-Nov. 4.

In boys action last week, Saratoga slipped to 0-6 in the De Anza Division after an 11-5 loss to Los Altos. Chris Petri canned three goals in the game for the Falcons and Guido Graziossi and Mark Lord hit one apiece.

    Gilford stars

Cassie Gilford buried 21 kills in two matches, but the Prospect girls volleyball team could manage just a split in Mt. Hamilton Division play last week.

Gilford hammered six kills in a 16-14, 15-10, 12-15, 15-6 win over Del Mar to open the week. Kim Kolstad had six kills for the Dons.

But Prospect dropped a 1-15, 5-15, 15-10, 15-11, 15-9 decision to Oak Grove later in the week, despite 15 kills by Gilford. The Panthers slipped to 5-7 in the division and to 11-13 for the year with the loss.

In Santa Teresa Division play, Westmont lost a 15-10, 19-17, 15-4 nod to Piedmont Hills.

Over in the SCVAL, Lynbrook lost a 15-3, 15-6, 15-7 decision to Palo Alto to slip to 2-7 in the De Anza Division and to 17-14 for the year, and Saratoga lost 15-9, 15-5, 15-7 to Santa Clara in the El Camino Division.

    Warriors tie

Junior Karly Brownridge knocked in two goals, one off an assist from junior Nicki Baughman, to lead the Westmont girls field hockey team to a 2-2 tie against San Jose Academy in the West Valley Division.

The Warriors, 1-4-2 in the division and 1-11-2 for the year, had lost 5-0 to Los Altos earlier in the week.

In other local action, Lynbrook tied St. Francis 1-1 to move to 2-5-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division; Prospect lost 1-0 to Los Gatos to drop to 0-8 in Mt. Hamilton play; and Saratoga dropped a 1-0 nod to Monta Vista to slide to 4-1-1 in the Santa Teresa Division.
