Orientation Sessions for Child Advocates
Orientation sessions for Child Advocates of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties are being offered on Nov. 8, Nov. 14 and Dec. 6.
Child Advocates is a nonprofit organization whose volunteers shepherd abused, neglected or abandoned children through the Santa Clara County juvenile dependency system. Advocates must be 21 years old. There are no other prerequisites.
Child Advocates are appointed by a judge to speak for the child in court. They inform the court of the child's wishes and make recommendations about where and with whom the child should be. They aim to provide the children with a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible, which could mean reuniting them with their families or recommending adoption. Most advocates work with one child at a time.
Training begins on Jan. 17 in San Jose. Call 408.573.5605 for more information.
City reschedules housing meeting
When only a few members of the public showed up at a community meeting on the city's housing element update Oct. 5--the same night as the Saratoga City Council candidate forum--the meeting was rescheduled to Nov 8. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the planning conference room at City Hall.
The meeting will mainly be for the city's planning commissioners, but the public is welcome, according to Community Development Director James Walgren. The presentation by the consultant working on the update, from Parsons ES, an engineering science firm, should last about 45 minutes, Walgren said.
Saratoga has until December 2001 deadline to come up with a housing plan in place that provides programs to allow for below-market-rate housing. The city has an allocated regional share, according to the study done by the Association of Bay Area Governments, and the city is currently appealing these preliminary numbers.
The presentation on Nov. 8, will include an introduction on how the city plans the updating process, an overview of the state requirements and how the city will proceed through winter and spring with the project, Walgren said.
