Thrilling polo win for Falcons

Eight players combined to score 17 goals for the Saratoga water polo team last week--and the Falcons needed every one of them to pull out a thrilling, come-from-behind win over Wilcox.

Saratoga battled back from a 10-7 halftime deficit for a 17-15 win over the Chargers. The win left the Falcons perfect in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League at 6-0. Saratoga is 16-11 for the year.

Senior Jaison Carter poured in four goals to lead the Falcons to the important win over the Chargers. Simon O'Connell and Jason Cooper pitched in three goals apiece and Daniel O'Connell and David Kim hit two each. Kevin Buskirk, David Schneider and Gerald Askew supported with one each in the win.

The Chargers opened up a slim 5-3 lead in the first period and stretched that to 10-7 by the half. Saratoga outscored Wilcox 6-3 in the third quarter to tie the game 13-13 heading into the final period.

The Falcons topped the Chargers 4-2 in the last quarter to pull out the exciting win.

In other local polo action last week, Jamie Schuster pumped in four goals to lead Monta Vista to an 18-12 win over Lynbrook in De Anza Division play.

The Matadors evened their record at 3-3 in league play with the win. They are now 15-15 for the year.

Clifton Awuy fired in five goals and Jason Chavez and Ross Morrill added three each for Lynbrook in the loss. Scott Anderson also scored a goal.

The loss left the Vikings 0-5 in league play.

Lynbrook lost four games last weekend in the Felix Invitational, but Awuy and Morrill put up some big numbers. Morrill scored nine goals in the four games and Awuy added eight.

Awuy scored three goals and Morrill and Chavez hit one each in a 23-5 loss to Foothill, and Morrill had four goals and Awuy two in a 15-6 loss to Live Oak.

Awuy led the way with three goals and Morrill and Frank Liao hit two apiece in an 18-10 loss to Palo Alto, and Morrill scored two goals in a 12-6 loss to Atwater.

In girls' water polo action, Lynbrook posted back-to-back wins over Cupertino and Monta Vista to improve to 10-0 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League season and to 16-7-1 overall.

Junior Suzannah Johnson fired home five goals and Joanna Chung and Samara Silverman hit two apiece for the Vikings in a 12-1 win over Cupertino. Goals by Jennifer Martin and Jini Clausen rounded out the scoring for the Vikes.

Johnson came back later in the week with seven goals to lead Lynbrook past Monta Vista 21-3. Silverman supported with four goals, Clausen had three, and Martin hit two.

Diana Nguyen, Chung, Claire Holt, Anila Thomas and Tine Van Criekinge also scored for the winners.

Lynbrook was coming off of a solid 13-4 win over Homestead. Johnson led the Vikes with four goals and Martin had three. Holt supported with two goals and Chung, Silverman, Clausen and Nicole Morasky added one each.

Shannon Moore pitched in seven goals and Cari Cowdrey added three, but the Saratoga girls' water polo team dropped a tight 14-12 decision to St. Francis. Megan Kirwan and Andrea Vu-Nguyen added goals for Saratoga in the loss.

The Lancers opened up a 4-1 lead in the first period, but Saratoga closed the gap to two by halftime, 7-5. The Falcons topped the Lancers 5-4 in the third to get within a goal at 11-10, but St. Francis stretched its lead to two in the fourth to clinch the win.
