Board resolution opposes the state's death penalty
Santa Clara County's Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 in favor of a resolution last week supporting a moratorium on the death penalty in California. Supervisor Liz Kniss, who represents Saratoga, voted in support of the moratorium.
The move follows similar resolutions already passed by the city and county of San Francisco, and the cities of Menlo Park, Berkeley, Oakland and Santa Cruz.
Local human rights groups hailed the county's stance, which, according to recent statewide polls, is supported by nearly two-thirds of Californians.
Gov. Gray Davis, however, is reportedly resolute on upholding the death penalty.
Panel set to discuss film at West Valley
On Nov. 7, West Valley College will sponsor a film screening and discussion panel about life for women in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
At 12:30 p.m., the college will show Beneath the Veil, an inside look at living conditions in Afghanistan filmed by reporter Saira Shah.
The film contains graphic images of life under the Taliban, including a public execution and the aftermath of a village massacre.
A panel of Afghan women will convene following the screening to discuss life in their homeland before and after the Taliban took control.
The event will be held in the Language Arts Room 10 on the West Valley campus.

The trip runs from May 14 to June 12, 2002.
Applicants for the group study exchange program must be between 25 and 40 and work for a business or profession recognized by the Rotary Club.
