    Students nominated

    The Wendy's High School Heisman program honors the nation's top high school student-athletes with awards based on academics, athletics and community service.

    Julia Barmeier and Tim Chang of Saratoga, Matea Lisica and Sander Van Der Heide of Prospect, and Lindsey Sherburne and Matthew Verbrugge of Mitty are among those senior athletes from the area who have been nominated for the honor.

    There will be 12 finalists selected from the national list of nominees with the two national winners claiming the ultimate awards Dec. 8.

    Softball Signups

    The Los Gatos-Saratoga Girls Softball Association will hold signups for the spring 2002 season Nov. 6 and 13, 7-9 p.m., at Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos and Nov. 14 and 15, 6-9 p.m., at the Saratoga Community Center.

    The league is open to girls ages 7-15. For more information, call 408.370.0426.

    Youth Basketball

    Elementary school students in the first through sixth grades are eligible to compete in the upcoming Saratoga Youth Basketball League sponsored by the Saratoga Recreation Department.

    Games are played on Saturdays, Jan. 5 through March 16. The instructional league stresses basketball fundamentals, teamwork and sportsmanship. Players will play at least two quarters of each game.

    Teams for players in the first through fourth grades will be formed by school zones. Players in the fifth and sixth grades must attend a skills assessment Dec. 8 at Redwood Middle School to determine team placement. Call 408.868.1248
