'Bye Bye Birdie' flies in locally
The theater arts department at West Valley College in Saratoga will perform Bye Bye Birdie on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons from Nov. 16 through Dec. 2. The light-hearted musical, set in the late 1950s, tells the story of Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley look-alike, who must say goodbye to his adoring fans and prepare to go into the U.S. Army. Songs include "Put On a Happy Face" and "Got a Lotta Livin' to Do."
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors; all seating is general admission. The West Valley College Theatre is at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. Free parking is available in Lot 7; pay lots are also available. Call 408.741.2058 for show times or directions.
Local art group holds meeting
The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites interested members of the public to attend its Nov. 8 meeting, which takes place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 13601 Saratoga Ave., at 7 p.m. This month's guest is Pat Suggs, a pastel artist, who will discuss the history and background of her art form. She will also give a demonstration on how to make a simple pastel drawing and how to build and layer colors.
Refreshments will be served. Saratoga Contemporary Artists is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' works and occasionally paint together. Call 408.255.5026 for more information.
Snowboarders get free advice
As part of its ongoing series of programs open to the community, REI Saratoga has invited snowboarding specialists Russ Cantu and Mike Sapp to give a presentation titled "Snowboarding 101" on Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
The men will discuss the fast-growing sport and give details about various types of boots, bindings, boards, clothes, accessories, riding styles and places to go snowboarding. They will also cover safety issues.
REI is located in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. There is no charge to attend this event; all ages are welcome. Call 408.871.8765 for more information.
