    Council honors Towse, appoints commissioners

On Nov. 1, the city council honored outgoing library commissioner Sally Towse and also appointed three citizens to the city's library commission.

Towse had served on the commission since 1991, and she continues to serve the city as president of Saratoga's Library Foundation.

The council appointed Donald Johnson, who currently serves on the citizens oversight committee for the new library, to replace Towse on the commission. The council reappointed library commissioners Ci Ci O'Donnell and Ruth Gipstein. Gipstein is also a member of the library expansion committee.

Senior center to offer flu shots

The annual flu shot clinics offered at the Saratoga Senior Center will be held this year on Nov. 18 and Dec. 2, from 8 a.m. to noon. The fee is $5 per person and reservations are not required.

The Santa Clara County Public Health Department arranges the clinics and volunteer hospital nursing staff--under the direction of local doctors and assisted by other volunteers recruited by the senior center--conduct the clinics.

Children under 18 and pregnant women are required to have written statements from their doctors to receive shots. Call 408.868.1257.

    Council approves more deputies

In response to an increase in residents' complaints about traffic congestion in Saratoga, the city council on Nov. 1, unanimously approved increasing the number of Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies on patrol in Saratoga by two officers. Both deputies--one a patrol car officer and one a motorcycle officer--will cost the city an additional $332,393 annually.

Beginning in 2003, the city will receive TEA funds of approximately $400,000 each year as a result of the passage of Senate Bill 1883 and these funds could be used to offset the cost of the two new officers, according to the city's director of administrative services, Mary Jo Walker. Prior to 2003, the city could use the $96,366 refund from the sheriff's office for overpayment for law enforcement services last year, as well as the city's general fund.
