'The Hobbit' to appear at West Valley College
The West Valley College theater arts department presents a musical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic tale The Hobbit on Nov. 17-18 and 24-26 and Dec. 1-3. The story tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a humble hobbit who positively loathes adventures, but ends up on a quest that has him battling an array of dangerous creatures to save Middle Earth.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens. A limited number of discount tickets of $5 per person are available to groups of 15 or more. The campus is at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. Call 408.741.2058.
Local ecologist, photographer tells of travels
As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited professional wildlife photographer and ecologist Doug Cheeseman of Saratoga to give a slide presentation of his travels in the Southern Hemisphere on Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Among the locales he's visited are the rolling grasslands of the Falkland Islands, the towering peaks of South Georgia Island and the fjords of the Antarctic Peninsula. He will also talk about the many birds and mammals of the areas and share what is being done to preserve their unique habitats.
REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. There is no charge to attend this event; all ages are welcome. Call 408.871.8765.
Foothill Club hosts program by Jerry Smith
The Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes the honorable Jerry Smith to speak at the second program of its 2000-2001 Public Lecture Series on Nov. 28, at 10 a.m. The event is cosponsored by the International Relations Section of the Commonwealth Club of Silicon Valley. Smith will speak on his experiences in establishing democratic institutions in former Soviet bloc countries. He is a retired state senator and Appellate Court judge and a former mayor of Saratoga.
The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, at 20399 Park Place. Admission is a $6 donation. Call 408.354.2527 or 408.867.2361.
