Joy Atkins
Atkins, Constantin and Jewett returning to WVC-MCC board
By Kara Chalmers
Voters elected three incumbent candidates-Joy Atkins, Chris Constantin and Frank Jewett-to the West Valley-Mission Community College District board of trustees for Trustee Area 3. A fourth candidate, newcomer Joe Pandit, ran as well, for one of the three open board seats.
The West Valley-Mission Community College District is made up of two campuses: West Valley College in Saratoga and Mission College in Santa Clara. The board consists of seven elected trustees.
Chris Constantin
Atkins, with a vote count of 53,660, won the highest percentage of votes-27.4 percent. Constantin, at 52,363 votes, obtained 26.8 percent of the total votes and Jewett, at 50,086 votes, won 25.6 percent.
Pandit, who ran on a ticket with Jewett, secured 39,403 votes, or 20.2 percent of the total.
Atkins has been a board member since 1988, and Constantin was elected to the board in 1996, when he was 20 years old, becoming the youngest person ever elected as a trustee in the country. The board appointed Jewett in July 2000 to serve as a provisional trustee, following the retirement of trustee Phil Stokes.
Frank Jewett
The new board members agree that completion of the Mission College campus and upgrading the West Valley College campus are major issues in the district, and that a stadium at West Valley College is a nonissue at this point.
