    Meet of year for Falcons

    By Dick Sparrer

    Two, three, four, five.

That pretty well describes the Saratoga effort at the league cross country finals held last week at the Crystal Springs course in Belmont.

Los Gatos finished first in most divisions at the finals, but Saratoga was among the league leaders, finishing second in both the boys varsity and junior varsity divisions, third in the girls JV race, fourth in the girls varsity class and fifth in the boys frosh-soph event.

"The league championships proved to be the best meet of the year for the Falcons," said Saratoga coach Marshall Clark after the finals. "Thirty Saratoga runners had personal bests. It was a great way to conclude the regular season."

Los Gatos, the top-ranked team in the Central Coast Section and a favorite to win the CCS title Nov. 13 at Crystal Springs, nailed the top five spots to easily win the boys varsity race.

But Jacob Christopherson finished sixth in 16:47 on the 2.95-mile course to lead Saratoga to a team second. Nobuaki Tomine was 10th in 17:02, with Jeff Beyers 11th in 17:03, David La 13th in 17:09 and Richard La 15th in 17:20. All five Falcons earned all-league honors for their efforts.

Donald Prolo finished 20th overall in 17:48 with teammate Lee Blair 37th in 19:13.

Gatos easily won the title with a low 15 points, but Saratoga ran to second at 55 with Fremont a distant third at 82.

Paula McNally finished fifth overall in 19:56 to lead the Saratoga girls to a team fourth in varsity action. McNally, whose time is third best on the Saratoga all-time list for girls, won an all-league spot with her finish.

Gatos won the team title with 31 points, with St. Francis a close second at 32. Monta Vista was third at 97, with Saratoga right behind with 99 points.

Dernie Wang was 21st in 21:45 for the Falcons, with MiMi Choi 24th in 22:08, Laura Lin 26th in 22:21, Jenny Yoo 36th in 23:03, Carol Liu 37th in 23:09 and Miranda Sun 38th in 23:13.

Tony Yiu was fourth in 18:40, with Ian Kolb sixth in 19:08 to lead the Falcons to a second-place finish in the boys JV class. Los Gatos had 19 points to win the title, with Saratoga second at 54 and Monta Vista third at 62.

Yiu and Kolb each nailed all-league spots with their times. Steven Goldsworthy was 13th in 19:44, with Warren Wong 14th in 19:45, David Lin 17th in 19:48 and Hesse McKechnie 18th in 19:48.

The Saratoga girls were third in the junior varsity division behind St. Francis and Los Gatos. Judy Wang was 14th in 22:28, with Brandi Tate 26th in 23:36, Cecelia Dotzler 27th in 23:42 and Mary Elliott 30th in 23:56.

Trevor Adams was 11th in 19:14, with Justin Gardner 20th in 19:46 to lead the Saratoga boys frosh-soph to a team fifth. Tomo Mori, the top freshman finisher, was 23rd in the race in 19:59, with Ryuta Saka 26th in 20:19.
