Panthers lose in upset bid
Falcons finish with victory
By Dick Sparrer
Prospect went into the final game of the 2000 football season with just a single thought--upset.
The Panthers had just one win in a rather disappointing showing in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. And they would have liked nothing better than to finish the year with an upset victory over Del Mar in the final regular season game for each club.
While the win would have meant little more than bragging rights for the Panthers, a loss would have been devastating for the Dons. Del Mar needed a victory to climb into a three-way tie for second place in the division, and that would mean that the Dons' Central Coast Section playoff hopes would remain alive.
They did... but not for long.
Del Mar beat Prospect 10-6 to finish in a three-way tie for second place with Gunderson and Andrew Hill. The CCS playoff representative would then be decided by a coin flip, and it was Hill winning the toss to move on to the playoffs.
The Dons ended the year at 6-4 after beating the Panthers in the final game of the season.
Senior quarterback Jason Campbell scored on a 1-yard run and Ted Perry kicked an extra point and a 22-yard field goal to lift the Dons to the tight win over the Panthers.
The win left the Dons 4-2 in the division. Prospect was 1-5 in Santa Teresa play and 3-7 for the year.
Warriors fall
Westmont finished the year just a notch under the .500 mark after losing 35-0 to Valley Christian last Friday night in a nonleague game.
The Warriors finished the year 4-6 after posting a 2-4 mark in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.
Falcons win
Saratoga finished the year on a winning note, beating Los Altos 27-14 in a nonleague game.
The season ended the same way it began for the Falcons--with a win. Saratoga went 3-0 in the preseason before going 0-5-1 in the rugged De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The win over the Eagles in last Thursday's nonleague game left Saratoga 4-5-1 for the year.
The Falcons and Eagles battled to a scoreless tie in the first quarter, but Saratoga took control of the game with two touchdowns in the second period.
Junior quarterback Scott Moran scored on a 3-yard run in the second and senior back Kirk Robinson scored on a 3-yard run before the half. A.J. Weitsman converted after each touchdown, and the Falcons took a 14-0 lead in at intermission.
Los Altos answered back with a TD in the third and added a 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 14-8, but the Falcons regained control with two more touchdowns in the fourth.
Robinson went 26 yards for a score and sophomore back John Griffin scored on a 4-yard run. Weitsman added one more extra point, and the Falcons had enough for a 24-16 victory.
Moran finished his junior season with a strong showing, completing six of 16 passes for 148 yards.
The win marked the final game for Saratoga senior co-captains James Lii, Michael Cable, Peter Foster, Michael Charters, Jon Moshier, John Hart and Jeff Swanberg.
