    On Campus

    SHS computer whiz retires after 18 years

    Saratoga High School computer technical expert Mel Holliday is retiring after 18 years. When Holliday began work at Saratoga High, the school had 16 computers. Now, it has almost 200. "If it had to do with computers, I did it," Holliday said.

    Oct. 29 was her last day on campus, and teachers and students gave her a "lovely send-off" with a cake and music by the student orchestra. Holliday worked at the district office until Nov. 11, and is now enjoying retirement. Chuck Gibbs, who previously worked in maintenance at the school and has a technology background, will take her place.

    SHS PTSA offers forum on a caring community

    The Saratoga High School PTSA on Nov. 18 will present, How to Create a More Caring Community, an informational forum for parents on how the school is trying to support its students. Guest speakers include teen counselor Malena Matlack, Peer to Peer students, conflict management students, and Karen Hyde, vice principal of student activities. The event will be held in the Saratoga High School library at 7:30 p.m.

    SHS teacher picked for the Fulbright Teacher Program

    Saratoga High School teacher Paul Page was chosen from a pool of more than 2,500 applicants to participate in the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. Page on Nov. 15 departs for three weeks in Japan. His trip is geared toward promoting greater intercultural understanding between the two nations. He plans to relay his experiences in Japan to SHS via daily email messages.

    The Saratoga High School marching band says Aloha

    The Saratoga High School marching band, under the leadership of new band director Michael Boitz, said "aloha" to friends and teachers on Nov. 9. They departed on a week-long band competition in Hawaii, where they will perform an enthusiastic show with an African theme in the quest for trophies.

    UC-San Diego students recognize past teachers

    Freshmen at UC-San Diego were asked to identify high-school faculty members who had a profound effect on their high-school experience. The Saratoga High School alumni who enrolled at the university this fall identified SHS teachers Judith Sutton, Bill Williams, Mike Davey and Karen Hyde.
