Villa Montalvo collecting now for book fair

Villa Montalvo's annual book fair, scheduled for April 1 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., still needs a few good books for the Montalvo Specials table. This table features a variety of hardcovers and paperbacks in new or gently used condition. The book fair is a benefit for Montalvo's Phelan Library, which volunteers are working to return to its 1930 ambiance, both by restoring the library physically and by building an authentic book collection reminiscent of the late U.S. Sen. James Phelan's well-known library. It now houses about 900 volumes; the goal is to increase that number to 1,930.

Villa Montalvo is at 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga. For more information about the fair, or to make a book donation, call Althea Andersen at 650.254.1148.

Gallery Saratoga presents annual holiday exhibit

Through Dec. 29, Gallery Saratoga will be transformed into an artistic holiday bazaar with Christmas Treasures, an exhibit of gift-giving and decorating ideas featuring photography, jewelry, pottery, silk scarves, greeting cards, holiday ornaments, paintings in all mediums and other original works of art by the gallery's member artists, most of whom reside in Saratoga, Los Gatos, neighboring South Bay cities and in various locales in Santa Cruz County.

The gallery is at 14531 Big Basin Way, Unit 3. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 408.867.0458.

Sierra Club gives a presentation on snow camping

As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club to its local store for a presentation on snow camping. The program includes a slide show and lecture on traveling safely on skis or snowshoes, staying warm and dry, building effective snow shelters, locating water, preparing meals in a snow kitchen, and navigating with a map and compass, even through avalanche terrain.

REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For information, call 408.871.8765.
