Basketball for all in Saratoga

By Dick Sparrer

They may not be playing games in the National Basketball Association right now, but there's no lockout in Saratoga ... basketball begins soon for kids and adults alike.

The Saratoga Recreation Department will host a youth basketball league for boys and girls in grades 3-8, and the department will also sponsor basketball play for Saratoga residents ages 35-and-over. For information on basketball progams, call 868-1248.

Youth basketball

Youth league games will be played on Saturdays from Jan. 9-March 30 at Saratoga High School and Redwood Middle School. The instructional league stresses basketball fundamentals, teamwork and sportsmanship. Everybody plays at least two quarters per game.

Third- and fourth-grade teams will be formed by zones. Players in grades 5-8 will attend a skills assessment sesson on Dec. 12 at Redwood to determine team placement.

Teams in all divisions will practice one evening per week during the season, and each player receives a uniform shirt.

Men's 35-plus league

League play will begin Dec. 5 for the Saratoga men's 35-plus basketball league. Manager's packets are now available, and team registration begins Nov. 20. Games will be played Saturday mornings at West Valley Community College.

45-plus open basketball

Over 45-plus basketball begins Dec. 3 at Saratoga High. The cost for the six-week session is $39 per player, and open play is available for Saratoga residents on Thursdays, 7-9 p.m. Proof of age is required.
