Foothill Club lecture focus is Ohlone life

For the second of its 1998-99 Public Lecture Series, the Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes Laura Jones, Stanford University's campus archaeologist, who will give a slide presentation Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. titled "What We Need to Know about the Ohlone Culture--The Past and the Future."

Jones monitors all archaeological digs located on Stanford's 8,180 acres and has served as an adviser for the University's long-term planning and development. She is also the archaeological expert for the local Muwekma Ohlone tribe.

The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, located at 20399 Park Place. A donation of $6 is appreciated. For information, call 867-2361 or 354-2527.

West Valley College holds a holiday arts, gifts show

Faculty members, staff and students from West Valley College are now showing their works at the college's Holiday Arts and Gift Show, which runs through Dec. 8 at the Campus Center Gallery.

Among the items for sale are paintings in various mediums, ceramics, photographs and sculpture. Everything is for sale; the gallery retains 30 percent of each purchase, the rest of which goes to the artists.

Teaching tolerance is lecture's message

Civil rights lawyer Morris Dees, one of four speakers coming to the area in upcoming months as part of a lecture series sponsored by the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning, gives a presentation Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth David, located at 19700 Prospect Road in Saratoga. Dees, who co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Center, speaks on "Teaching Tolerance in an Age of Militias." All are welcome to attend. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for those age 30 or younger. Babysitting is available with advance reservation. Advance tickets are available by calling 793-5190. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
