Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsFoothill Club lecture focuses on sacred space The Public Lecture Committee of the Saratoga Foothill Club holds the second of its 1997-98 series on Nov. 25 at 10 a.m. with "Cultivating Sacred Space: Gardening for the Soul." Elizabeth Murray, a local landscape architect, photographer, painter and author of three books, leads the discussion. The rest of the lecture series features speakers in January, February and March. The Saratoga Foothill Club began in 1907 with 12 women who wanted to form a study group. From 1909 to 1914, they helped organize the effort for a countywide library system. Now 250 members strong, the club fosters and encourages intellectual and civic activities within the club and the community. A donation of $6 is appreciated. Villa Montalvo hosts open studios The quarterly Open Studios and Readings event, part of Villa Montalvo's Artist Residency Program, takes place Nov. 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Villa, located at 15400 Montalvo Road. Glen Rogers Perrotto is a San Jose artist known for prints and monotypes. At Montalvo, she is working on large-scale drawings that explore ancient symbols and artifacts relating to women's spirit and identity. DiMeo, a Massachusetts painter, is working on new formats to depict reflected space. Joan Mark is a research associate in the history of anthropology at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. She is completing a study of silver designer William Spratling of Mexico and is working on a biography of Manuel Gamio, "the father of Mexican anthropology." Cheryl "Alice" Morse, a poet from Washington, is working on her third collection of poems, many of which were inspired by a recent stay in Italy. For more information, call 961-5818.
