President awards students for hours of volunteer work
Eight students from Los Gatos and Saratoga high schools received national President's Student Service Awards for doing more than 100 hours of community service. President George Bush recognized the students--Adrienne Clark, Ruth Dawson, Holden Groves, Courtney Hayashi, Amy Kerner and Priscilla Park of Los Gatos High School, and Julia Barmeier and Simcha Gold of Saratoga High School--with Gold Awards, the highest award level.
The students volunteered for Amigos de las Americas, an international, nonprofit organization that trains students to volunteer in community service projects. Santa Clara Valley chapter volunteers painted a house and cleared a yard last spring, and then spent up to eight weeks in Latin American communities, working on various health, education and environmental projects, last summer.
The Los Gatos and Saratoga high school students worked in Costa Rica; Dajabon, Dominican Republic; Guanajuato, Mexico; Intibuca, Honduras; and Nicaragua.
