City monitoring Allendale traffic
The city will hold off on any drastic action to remedy traffic and parking problems surrounding the Allendale Avenue U.S. Post Office, Redwood Middle School and the city's civic center complex.
Redwood parents currently use the rear portion of the civic center parking lot as a drop-off point in the morning, creating a knot of traffic and people in that portion of city property. Post office employees have also regularly used the city lot for parking, though that practice is waning, according to city staff.
A task force within the city's public safety commission has explored opening a section of Redwood's playground in the morning for drop-offs. Redwood Principle Christopher Farmer is also pushing parents to use only Redwood property to drop off children at the school.
County chief to retire this year
Doug Sporleder, 59, who has served the Santa Clara County Fire Department as chief for the last 11 years, will step down Dec. 31.
Sporleder has been a firefighter with the county fire department for 38 years.
Sporleder's department recently signed an agreement with the Saratoga Fire District to allow the two departments to cooperate more closely in responding to fires. The county department serves portions of northern and eastern Saratoga not covered by the Saratoga Fire District.
Sporleder's brother, Steve, retired from the Saratoga Fire District last spring after serving that department as a captain. The Sporleders are natives of Los Gatos.
Village lighting ceremony Nov. 23
The Village's new lighting arrangement will be illuminated for the first time in a special ceremony on the evening after Thanksgiving.
The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Blaney Plaza at the entrance to Big Basin Way.
The lighting coincides with the annual merchant's open house in the Village. Caroling, carriage rides and holiday sweets will color the downtown area that night.
The Saratoga Historical Museum and the Book-Go-Round will both have extended hours during the event.
For more information on the gala evening, call Danielle Surdin at the city offices, 408.868.1294.
