Green Valley to hold food drive

Green Valley Recycling's 10th annual holiday food drive is scheduled for Dec. 4-8. Green Valley customers in Los Gatos, Saratoga, Monte Sereno and unincorporated county pockets are asked to place their canned food donations next to their curbside recycling bins on their regular collection day.

The food will be delivered to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Green Valley recommends that customers wait until the morning of collection before setting food on the curb.

Residents may also drop off donations at the Green Valley office at 573 University Ave., in Los Gatos. Call 408.354.2100 for more information.

    County library number one

The Santa Clara County Library system--of which the Saratoga Community Library on the corner of Saratoga and Fruitvale avenues is a part--has been ranked No. 1 in the nation by a national ratings index.

Hennen's American Public Library Ratings Index ranks the nation's public library systems in categories based on population served. Santa Clara County led its category after being ranked second in 1999 and seventh in 1998.

"We're really fortunate to be in an area that's so supportive of our libraries," said the Saratoga Community Library's head librarian, Dolly Barnes. "It's really our library users that make it happen."

Open House is on Nov. 24

Big Basin Way merchants will put on Saratoga's Annual Holiday Open House Nov. 24 this year, the Friday night after Thanksgiving. The event, which has been a tradition for more than 20 years, features carolers and Santa Claus. Most merchants will stay open later than usual and will offer cookies, candy and hot apple cider in their shops. Big Basin Way is already decorated for the holidays with white lights on the trees, and new wreaths on the street lights.

Open house organizer Donna Collins of Henrietta Hen's Country Store, said that although the entertainment ends at 9 p.m., stores will stay open until 10:30 or 11 p.m. She added that people start arriving as early as 4 p.m.
