Newly updated senior handbook lists variety of helpful resources

The 16th edition of the Senior Handbook, a publication of Information & Referral Services Inc., is available at senior centers and other venues that provide assistance or service to seniors throughout Santa Clara County. In Saratoga, Senior Handbook 2000 is available at the Saratoga Senior Center, 19655 Allendale Ave.

The handbook targets senior citizens who need various levels of assistance and their adult children who must now care for them or find others to provide care. As calls from caregivers and adult children have grown, the Senior Handbook has kept up. For ease of reference, the softcover book's table of contents is organized into nearly two dozen sections.

The main sections encompass the following topics: food and nutrition, health and wellness, home care and nursing, mental health services, substance abuse, housing, transportation, emergency services, consumer action, death-related issues, employment, family support, financial, insurance, legal, tenant/landlord, recreation, senior centers and nutrition sites, volunteer programs, education, and civic and community resources.

The book also contains an advertiser index, an agency index and a list of websites that deal with senior-related issues.

The Senior Handbook can be picked up free at the Saratoga location, or you may stop by the I&RS office at 1275 S. Winchester Blvd., Suite A in San Jose. IR&S requests a $3 donation for books picked up at its office, or a $5 for books mailed to individuals' homes. For more information, call 408.345.4532. Information is also available on the Internet at www.iandrinfo.org.
