City hosts two donation barrels for food drive

This holiday season, the Second Harvest Food Bank in San Jose aims to collect 2 million pounds of donated food in Santa Clara County. Saratoga is doing its part to help.

The city is hosting two donation barrels for the organization's holiday food drive. They can be found in City Hall's administration lobby and the recreation center until Dec. 20. Canned, packaged and other nonperishable foods are welcome and appreciated.

    BootCamp moves inside for winter

Community BootCamp this winter is renting space in Saratoga's community center for its West Valley College session in a time slot few other groups want: 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. weekdays.

The group fitness program, run by Cupertino's TimeOut Services Inc., is held all over the Bay Area. According to BootCamp instructor Remy Crawford, the workouts are designed for all ages, sizes and fitness levels.

"It's not military style," he said. "We call it boot camp, because of the early hour."

For its session that started Nov. 15, Saratoga's BootCamp will move some of its workouts indoors because of the cold weather. The group meets at the community center or the West Valley College track. There are nine five-week sessions a year, and newcomers are welcome at any time. For more information, call 800.926.6552.

State planning group honors Terry Trumbull

County Planning Commissioner Terry Trumbull, who represents the area from Saratoga to Palo Alto, on Nov. 6 was named Planning Commissioner of the Year for California.

The California County Planning Commissioners Association gave the award after County Planning Director Ann Draper nominated Trumbull, who has been a major player in the development of land use policies in the county for 25 years, she said.

This is Trumbull's eighth year as a county planning commissioner, and he recently finished his term as the commission's chair. He is an environmental attorney and teaches environmental law at San Jose State University.
