Saratoga NewsSports BriefsYouth Basketball The Saratoga Recreation Department will host a youth basketball league for boys and girls in grades 3-8. Youth league games will be played on Saturdays from Jan. 9 to March 30 at Saratoga High School and Redwood Middle School. The instructional league stresses basketball fundamentals, teamwork and sportsmanship. Everybody plays at least two quarters per game. Third- and fourth-grade teams will be formed by zones. Players in grades 5-8 will attend a skills assessment sesson on Dec. 12 at Redwood to determine team placement. Teams in all divisions will practice one evening each week during the season, and each player receives a uniform shirt. Call 868-1248. Adult Basketball The Saratoga Recreation Department will sponsor basketball play for Saratoga residents ages 35-and-over. League play will begin Dec. 5 for the Saratoga men's 35-plus basketball league. Manager's packets are now available, and team registration begins Nov. 20. Games will be played Saturday mornings at West Valley Community College. Over 45-plus basketball begins Dec. 3 at Saratoga High. The cost for the six-week session is $39 per player, and open play is available for Saratoga residents on Thursdays, 7-9 p.m. Proof of age is required. Call 868-1248. Basketball Camp A youth basketball mini-camp for boys and girls ages 7-12 will be held Dec. 28-30, 9 a.m.-noon each day, at the Central Branch of the YMCA. The registration deadline is Dec. 23. For more information, call 298-1717. Hockey Clinic The Central Branch of the YMCA will host a series of roller hockey clinics for boys and girls ages 7-12 on Dec. 5, 12 and 19, 9 a.m.-noon each day. Christmas Classic The Christmas Classic, a basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 7-8, will be held Dec. 18-20 in San Jose. The entry fee is $100, and the registration deadline is Dec. 1.
