Vikes run to titles

Juan Pablo Miramontes ran to an individual title, and the West Valley Community College women romped to a team title at the Northern California community college cross-country championships in Rocklin.

Miramontes covered the 4.0 miles in 20:46 to finish first overall in the men's division for the Vikings. He led West Valley to a team third in men's competition.

Serena Delaplace (Westmont) finished fifth in the women's division to lead the Vikings to a team title. Dela-place rambled over the 3.5-mile course in 19:44 to top a list of five Vikings in the race's top 20.

Rachael Wiseman was ninth in 20:01, with Lisa Renteria (Westmont) 12th in 20:09, Lydia Berlage 15th in 20:28 and Anniken Iverson 18th in 20:35.

Vikings win big

Chad Purcell (Monta Vista) ran for four touchdowns, and Brian Schweitzerhof (Saratoga) booted a field goal and six extra points to lead the West Valley Community College football team to a lopsided 57-26 win over Mendocino in crossover play in the South Division of the Northern California Football Alliance.

The Vikings, 6-4 for the year, were coming off of wins of 43-9 win over De Anza and 47-0 over Hartnell.

Basketball Signups

The Saratoga Recreation Department is holding signups for boys and girls in the third-eighth grades interested in playing basketball this season.

Games are played on Saturdays from January through early March. Call 868-1270.

The league also needs coaches for the upcoming season. Adults are needed to teach youngsters the basic fundamentals of basketball, and to supervise them during games and practices. The program coordinator will provide training in basic first aid, coaching techniques and philosophy. For more information, call 868-1252.

Youth Sports Grants

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame will continue in its tradition of supporting youth sports by offering grants to youth sports organizations through its BASHOF Youth Fund.

The grants are available for youth sports groups to purchase sports equipment. Applications for the grants must be completed and returned by Dec. 31.
