Strikers, Wizards win AYSO soccer titles

    By Dick Sparrer

Who says lightning can't strike twice in the same place? The Strikers of the Saratoga AYSO know better.

The Strikers hit with their own brand of lightning to back up a regular season co-championship with a title in the Saratoga AYSO tournament in the boys under-10 age group.

The Strikers, who had finished the regular season in a first-place deadlock with the Sharks, finished tied with Sabotage for the tournament crown. In each case, the Strikers won tiebreakers to clinch titles.

The Strikers and Sabotage were unofficially named co-champions in the tournament's upper flight, but by league rules the Strikers took the title because they allowed fewer goals.

The Tigers finished first with the Eagles second in the lower flight of the tourney.

In the regular season, the Strikers were first, with the Sharks second and the Hurricanes third.

In under-10 girls play, the Wizards won the tournament title in the upper flight after finishing second in the regular season. The Wizards posted a solid 3-1 record to win the tourney crown, their only loss a 1-0 setback at the hands of the second-place Panthers.

In the lower flight, the Cyber Rays finished first in tournament play with the Strikers second.

The Green Machine beat the Wizards 4-2 in the final game of the season to win the regular season title. Green Machine finished first with the Wizards second and the Piranhas third. But the Wizards beat the Machine 2-1 in the league tournament.

In all, there were 300 boys and girls competing in the under-10 tournaments played Nov. 15-16 at Redwood Middle School and El Quito Park.
