    Give us a brake!

I walk our four children, along with neighborhood kids, to school each morning. The majority of drivers will not stop to let us cross in the crosswalks, especially on Herriman Avenue in front of Saratoga High School. Come on, folks! We're talking about a bunch of kids just trying to walk to school. Give us a brake!

Appeal process should not be an 'intrusion'

When the appeal and hearing process becomes an "intrusion" to an elected public official, we should all be worried.

An essential component of the City Council's election platform was to retain the character of Saratoga and our neighborhoods, a position I endorse. However, the decision to allow a batting cage (previously denied by the Planning Commission) in a residential neighborhood is inconsistent. The council's decision is particularly disturbing to those of us who support improvements to existing playfields, improvements not approved by the council because of the negative impact on the neighborhood.

How is a new batting cage more in keeping with neighborhood character than utilization of existing playfields?

Even more disturbing is a councilman's statement that the case was "... intruding on the public servant ..." and characterized this as a neighbor dispute that should never have come before the commission or council.

The neighbors acted in accordance with the process defined by the city (the same process used by those opposed to playing fields). Every resident has the right to have his or her case heard by the commission or council. A citizen who files a complaint or requests a hearing regarding apparent violations of city codes is exercising rights under our democratic form of government.

When an elected official complains that the right to an appeal and a hearing is an intrusion, we should all be very worried about who is representing us in our local government.
