Library ordinance posted today, Dec. 8

It's official. Council members on Nov. 23 approved an ordinance authorizing a bond measure to expand and renovate the Saratoga Library. The council meeting lasted less than five minutes because no members of the public were present to speak about the measure.

City staff on Dec. 1 will post the ordinance, as well as the resolution the council adopted on Nov. 17, in the Saratoga News. It will post the ordinance alone in the Dec. 8 issue. The public is invited to submit arguments supporting or opposing the bond measure to City Clerk Susan Ramos. Submissions must by made by Dec. 6 and use the appropriate forms, which are available in Ramos's office. City staff must determine and submit precise ballot language to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters by Dec. 10.

Chamber collects new toys for needy children

The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce plans to hold its first holiday cocktail party for members and their families at the Inn at Saratoga on Dec. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission is a small, new unwrapped toy.

According to Executive Director Abby Krimotat, the Chamber will deliver the toys to a local children or family shelter. Chamber member Kristin Davis said the Chamber also will accept new toys at its office, at 20460 Saratoga-Los Gatos Road. She said the Chamber will make sure the gifts are delivered directly to needy children by Christmas.

"It's important for all children to have something new," said Davis, who added that shelters don't always get donations of new toys for their children.

    Fire Department prepares for Y2K

The Saratoga Fire District will have 10 additional personnel, including full-time firefighters and volunteers, on duty New Year's Eve.

Captain Steve Sporleder said that the district has created a special incident action plan and has ordered additional medical supplies, extra fuel for the engines and fuel that can be hand-cranked in case of a power failure. There will be enough food and water for 20 personnel for 72 hours, he said.

"We don't often get to plan for incidents," he said, noting that New Year's Eve is an exception to the rule.
