Newberg bombs 33 points in Westmont's first two games

Leads warriors to win over Mountain View

By Dick Sparrer

Melissa Newberg is picking up in 1997 where she left off in. . . well, 1997--as a big scorer for Westmont's girls' basketball team.

Newberg has pitched in 33 points in Westmont's first two games in the 1997-98 season, just about a year after leading Westmont scorers in the 1996-97 campaign.

The 5-foot-11 senior forward had a three-point bucket among her four field goals and added seven points at the free-throw line to finish with 16 points in Westmont's 56-30 win over Mountain View last week.

Linda Matar, a 5-foot-5 junior guard, supported with nine points in the Westmont win. Sheryl Mahaffey finished with seven points, including a three-pointer, and Zuleeka Mohamed and Emillia Ortiz added six points apiece for the Warriors.

Sabine Bosklopper and Melissa Taylor chipped in with four points each, and Lindsay Hahn and Jennifer Casselberry rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

The Warriors opened up a 19-4 lead in the first period and outscored Mountain View 14-8 in the second and 13-7 in the first on the road to the lopsided victory.

Things hadn't gone quite as well earlier in the week. Newberg fired in 17 points, but the Warriors dropped a tough 40-37 decision to Homestead.

The Warriors jumped out to a quick 16-3 lead in the first period, but the Mustangs rallied from behind to top Westmont 19-4 in the second quarter to take a 22-20 lead by halftime.

Homestead outscored Westmont 12-4 in the third to lead 34-24 heading into the final period, then held on despite an impressive comeback by the Warriors.

Newberg led Westmont with 17 points. Mahaffey hit a three and finished with five points for the Warriors. Ortiz and Taylor had four points each, Hahn hit three and Alyssa Parsons and Matar had two each.

The Warriors, now 1-1 in nonleague play, will enter play in the annual Pioneer Classic in San Jose this week. The tourney runs Dec. 3-5 at Pioneer High School.

Newberg will lead the Warriors into action against such area powers as Monta Vista, Piedmont Hills, Live Oak and Santa Cruz in the eight-team tournament. Willow Glen, Oak Grove and host Pioneer round out the tournament field.
