Saratoga to shift council members
The Saratoga City Council is slated for re-organization on Dec. 11 at a special meeting. During the annual ceremony, the council selects the next mayor and vice mayor for the upcoming calendar year. Annual succession has been a formality since the city's incorporation in 1956, with the vice mayor filling the mayor's position every year.
If tradition holds this year, Vice Mayor Nick Streit would take over the mayor's position from Mayor John Mehaffey. Councilman Evan Baker is in line to become vice mayor.
Civic center up for discussion
The redesign of the city's civic center will be discussed in depth, with public input at a special session of the city council on Dec. 11.
The city is considering refashioning the center--which houses some buildings more than 30 years old--on the corner of Allendale and Fruitvale avenues, Christopher Noll, from Noll and Tam Architects, will present three civic center site plan options on Dec. 11.
His options will combine existing and new buildings. A new community and senior center, improvements to the civic theater, and an addition to city hall are included in all options.
The opportunity for a new large multi-use/gymnasium facility and teen center on the site will also be discussed at this meeting.
The presentation will be held at the Senior Center Care Center at 7:30 p.m. For information, call Joan Pisani at 868-1250 or visit the city website at http://www.saratoga.ca.us/master_plan.htm.
One West Valley student arrested
A West Valley student and eight other local youths were arrested recently in connection with a burglary at Cupertino High School on Nov. 22.
After an alarm bell rang at the school early on the morning of the 22nd, Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies arrested five youths found running or driving from the scene. The deputies also found computer equipment in the car of one individual.
Four arrests followed in the next five days, along with the discovery of a stolen master key, two-way radios and an "assignment" roster for the individuals suspected in the crime.
