Rosters needed
Preseason questionnaires and letters requesting rosters, schedules and information on winter teams have gone out to coaches of all high school and junior college sports for the winter season. Only a few of the questionnaires have been returned.
Coaches are urged to respond to our request by fax (408.354.3917), mail (P.O. Box 65, Los Gatos, CA 95031) or email (dispar@aol.com) as soon as possible so that we can begin coverage. Those coaches who did not receive the letter and questionnaire should contact Dick Sparrer at 408.978.9665 or at one of the numbers or addresses above.
Youth Basketball
Elementary school students in the first through sixth grades are eligible to compete in the upcoming Saratoga Youth Basketball League sponsored by the Saratoga Recreation Department.
Games are played on Saturdays, Jan. 5 through March 16. The instructional league stresses basketball fundamentals, teamwork and sportsmanship. Players will play at least two quarters of each game.
Teams for players in the first through fourth grades will be formed by school zones. Players in the fifth and sixth grades must attend a skills assessment Dec. 8 at Redwood Middle School to determine team placement.
First-and second-graders will use shorter baskets and practice before each game. Teams in the other divisions will practice once a week.
Each player receives a uniform shirt and photo package. For more information, call 408.868.1248.
Vikings win bowl
David Macchi pitched a second-quarter touchdown pass to Brian Davis, and David Jackson ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead the West Valley Community College football team to a 29-17 win over Contra Costa College in the East County Bowl Saturday at Los Medanos College in Pittsburgh.
Macchi, a former Willow Glen sensation, hit Davis, an ex-Pioneer star, with a 10-yard touchdown pass to get the scoring started for the Vikings.
Jackson ran 16 yards for a touchdown before the half, then capped the scoring with a 13-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Justin Basanesse blasted a 37-yard field goal in the win.
West Valley finished the year with a solid 7-4 season record.
