Saratoga resident and Monta Vista High School student, Oaz Nir, won an award for achieving the highest score among male high school seniors in the western United States on seven math and science College Board advanced placement tests. The award Nir won is the Siemens Student Award for Advanced Placement.
On Dec. 9 and 10, the Siemens Foundation will honor Nir and the 23 other students nationwide who received the highest scores of their regions, genders and grade levels, at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. At the third annual ceremony, the students will receive $3,000 scholarships and plaques.
The Siemens Foundation will also announce the male and female with the highest scores in the nation and will award them additional $5,000 scholarships.
Nir received the highest score of senior males in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming,
"Oaz is a remarkable individual and outstanding student," said Betty Pow, principal of Monta Vista High School. "He's very deserving of recognition and is very accomplished in his academic achievements."
Nir, a straight-A student, was one of six American students to advance to the finals of an international math competition in Seoul, South Korea, in July. He has received scores of five on 13 Advanced Placement tests and a 1600 on the SAT.
Nir has also found time for extracurricular activities at Monta Vista, including the math and science club, of which he is president; the speech and debate team, of which he is one of the top debaters; the robotics team; the Future Business Leaders of America organization; water polo and swimming. Last year, he took extra classes--psychology, statistics, philosophy and ancient history--at De Anza College.
